Local SEO: How to Dominate Searches in Your City

SEOAugust 1, 2026·7 min·DCL Studio

When someone searches "plumber Timișoara" or "accountant near me", Google doesn't answer with the best in the country. It answers with the company that seems the most relevant and trustworthy for that place. That's exactly what local SEO is: being the obvious choice for people in your area, right when they need you.

For a service business, this is the ground where you really can win. You're not competing with sites from another country, but with a handful of companies in the same city. And most of them make the same mistakes, which leaves you room to get ahead.

1. Google Business Profile: your main weapon

For local services, Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the best effort-to-result ratio in all of SEO. It's free, it shows up on the map and in local results, and people call straight from it. If you don't have it optimized, you're losing clients who were ready to contact you. We covered how to set it up correctly in Google Business Profile for services.

What to fill in correctly:

  • The exact company name, without artificially stuffing in keywords (Google penalizes "Cheap Plumber Timișoara SRL").
  • The right main category, plus relevant secondary categories.
  • The address and service area. If you go to the client, set the areas you cover, not just your office.
  • Hours, phone, link to the website, all identical to what appears on the site.
  • A clear description: what you do, who for, in which city.
  • Real photos: the team, finished jobs, the premises. Profiles with photos inspire more trust than empty ones.

The profile isn't "fill it in and forget it". Post updates regularly, answer questions, and keep the information current. An active profile is a signal that the company is running.

2. Reviews decide who wins

Between two companies that look the same, the client picks the one with more good, recent reviews. Reviews influence both your position on the map and the decision to get in touch. It's the one factor you can actively improve, with no advertising budget.

How to get reviews without it feeling forced:

  • Ask for a review right after you deliver, when the client is happy. That's when they're most willing.
  • Send a direct link to the review form, so they don't have to go looking.
  • Reply to every review, both the good ones and the bad ones. A calm reply to a criticism says more about you than ten compliments.
  • Don't buy fake reviews. They're obvious, and the risk of having your profile suspended isn't worth it.

Consistency beats volume. A few real reviews a month, year after year, count for more than 50 that appear all at once in a single week. You'll find more concrete tactics in how to get reviews from clients.

3. Dedicated pages for each city and service

If you cover several localities, a single "Services" page isn't enough. Google wants to understand that you're relevant for each area, and a dedicated page conveys that clearly.

The basic idea: one page for the service + city combination. For example "Appliance repairs Cluj-Napoca", with content written specifically for that city, not copied from another page with the name swapped out. Duplicate content doesn't help and can do harm.

On each such page, put:

  • A clear title and structure, with the service and city visible. We covered how to write titles and meta tags correctly in on-page SEO: titles, meta, and structure.
  • Real details about how you work in that area, response times, jobs done there.
  • Reviews or examples of clients from the region, if you have them.
  • A clear call to action: phone, form, contact button.

Watch out for a common trap: don't generate 40 near-identical pages just to "catch" every locality. Better a few solid pages, written seriously, for the cities that actually matter to you.

4. Consistent NAP: name, address, phone

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. These three pieces of information have to be identical everywhere you appear: on the site, in Google Business Profile, in directories, on Facebook. Small differences, "St." in one place and "Street" in another, or two phone numbers, confuse Google and weaken trust.

Check and fix the data in the directories relevant for Romania and in any listing you've appeared in over time. Consistency is boring, but it works.

5. Local citations and links

A "citation" is any mention of your company online, even without a link: a local article, a business directory, the page of a local association. Links from credible local sites, such as the local press, partners, or a chamber of commerce, carry double weight: both for SEO and for the clients who see them. We wrote at length about building authority in Google in backlinks and authority in Google.

A few realistic sources for a service business:

  • Reputable business directories in Romania (avoid the spammy ones).
  • Partners and suppliers you work with, who can mention you.
  • Sponsorships or involvement in local events.
  • Local press and blogs, if you have a story or an interesting case.

6. Your website has to support it all

The profile and the reviews bring people in, but the website converts them. If it loads slowly, doesn't look good on a phone, or doesn't say clearly what you do and in which area, the effort above is wasted. A fast, clear site, with a visible phone number and a simple form, turns searches into real inquiries.

Local SEO isn't a project with a start and an end. It's a set of habits: a well-kept profile, reviews requested consistently, relevant city pages, correct data everywhere. The companies that do this every month end up dominating, not because they know a secret trick, but because most of their competitors give up after the first month.
