The Complete Local SEO Guide for Romanian Businesses

SEOApril 14, 2026·8 min·DCL Team

Local SEO means showing up on Google when someone in your city searches for a service you offer. A dentist in Cluj ranking first for dentist Cluj gets between 40 and 120 new patients per month from Google, without spending on ads. A restaurant in Timișoara dominating local results fills the patio every weekend without extra marketing.

This guide is built on real projects we delivered at Design Creator Lab for Romanian clients between 2020 and 2025. We are not repeating theory from Moz or Ahrefs articles, we show exactly what works on the local market.

What is local SEO and how it differs from classic SEO

Local SEO is the process of optimizing your digital presence for searches with geographic intent. When someone searches barber near me, lawyer Timișoara or car service sector 3, Google displays a different result set than for generic searches.

The main difference: classic SEO targets informational keywords (for example how solar energy works), while local SEO targets transactional keywords with a geographic modifier. Conversion rates are significantly higher for local SEO because the user already has buying intent.

The three types of local Google results

  • Local Pack: the box with 3 businesses and a map shown at the top, above organic results. This captures 44% of clicks for local queries.
  • Local Finder: the expanded list accessed via Google Maps or the More places link.
  • Local organic results: classic pages that include the city in title, content or metadata.

A complete strategy targets all three positions simultaneously. Focusing only on Local Pack leaves 40% of potential traffic on the table.

Google Business Profile: the foundation of any local strategy

Google Business Profile, formerly Google My Business, is the most important digital asset for a local business. An optimized profile can drive more traffic than the entire website in the first 6 months.

Complete profile optimization

Start with basic information, but be obsessive about consistency. Name, address and phone (NAP) must be identical on Google, on your website, on Facebook and across every directory where you appear. An extra comma in the address or a phone prefix written differently (+40 vs 0040) reduces Google's trust in your data.

  • Primary category: choose the most specific category possible. Italian Restaurant beats Restaurant every time. Then add 3-5 relevant secondary categories.
  • Business description: 750 characters that naturally include the city, main services and a differentiator. No keyword stuffing.
  • Attributes: check every applicable attribute (wheelchair access, card payments, online booking, free Wi-Fi). Google uses them to match you with user filters.
  • Photos: minimum 20 quality images at setup, plus 2-4 new photos every week. Listings with many photos consistently get more calls than those with one or two.
  • Weekly posts: use the Updates section as a mini blog. Announcements, offers, events.

Reviews: a ranking and conversion factor

Reviews are among the heaviest-weighted Local Pack factors, and the importance of review signals has grown compared with previous editions, according to the Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors 2026 study. More importantly, they decide whether the user seeing your profile clicks through or picks the competitor.

Target a minimum of 50 reviews for small businesses and over 200 for high-volume operations. An average rating below 4.2 drastically reduces click-through rate. Respond to every review, including 5-star ones. Responses to negative reviews must be professional, free of excuses, with an invitation to continue the conversation privately.

On-page SEO for Romanian local businesses

The website remains the long-term engine of local SEO. A Google Business Profile without an optimized site only goes so far, then plateaus.

Location page structure

If you have a single location, create a page dedicated to the city alongside the main homepage. If you operate in multiple cities (for example a dental practice with offices in Timișoara and Arad), create a separate page for each location, with unique content, not duplicated.

Every location page should contain:

  • H1 title with the city (Dental Clinic in Timișoara, Iosefin District)
  • Full visible address, marked with LocalBusiness schema markup
  • Embedded Google Map
  • Operating hours
  • The local team, with real photos, not stock
  • Testimonials from clients in that city
  • Concrete directions (next to the central market, 5 minutes from tram station 8)
  • Location-specific services, if they differ

Local keywords: how to find them properly

Do not rely only on international tools like Ahrefs or Semrush. Their data for the Romanian market is partial. Combine them with:

  • Google Keyword Planner with location set exactly to your city
  • Google.ro auto-complete suggestions
  • People Also Ask and Related Searches
  • Direct local competitor analysis, not major national brands

For a veterinary clinic in Cluj, obvious keywords are vet Cluj or veterinary clinic Cluj-Napoca. The most valuable ones, however, are long-tail: cat vaccine Cluj price, 24/7 vet Mănăștur, dog spaying Cluj cost. They bring less individual traffic, but conversion is 3-5 times higher.

Citation building and Romanian local directories

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone on another website, regardless of whether a link exists. For the Romanian market, the focus should be on relevant local directories, not generic international lists.

Priority directories for Romania

  • Lista Firme (listafirme.ro)
  • Pagini Aurii (paginiaurii.ro)
  • Romania-Insider for B2B businesses
  • Industry-specific directories (for example Cazare.ro for tourism, Doctor.ro for medical services)
  • Local Chambers of Commerce
  • Professional associations in your field

NAP consistency is crucial. An audit we did last year for a Bucharest pastry chain uncovered 14 variations of the headquarters address across different platforms. After cleaning up citations, the Google profile climbed from position 8 to position 2 in the Local Pack for pastry shop sector 1 in 11 weeks.

Schema markup and technical aspects

Schema.org markup tells Google what each piece of information on the site represents. For local businesses, the LocalBusiness schema (or its subtypes like Restaurant, Dentist, LegalService) is mandatory.

Implement at minimum:

  • LocalBusiness schema with address, phone, geo-coordinates, hours
  • Review schema for testimonials displayed on the site
  • FAQ schema for frequently asked questions
  • BreadcrumbList for navigation

On the technical side, the site must load under 2.5 seconds on mobile, because over 70% of local searches happen on phones. At Design Creator Lab we build sites in Next.js and Laravel optimized for Core Web Vitals from day one, because a slow site cancels out all the local SEO work.

Local link building: quality over quantity

Links remain a major ranking factor, but for local SEO sources matter more than numbers. A link from the city hall, a local newspaper or a professional association is worth 50 links from generic directories.

Tactics that work on the Romanian market

  • Local sponsorships: sports events, festivals, conferences. Most offer a link on the official website.
  • Partnerships with complementary businesses: a guesthouse in Maramureș can get links from local tour guides, producers of traditional goods, restaurants.
  • Digital PR on local outlets: Adevărul, Mediafax, but especially regional publications such as Pressalert (Timișoara), Monitorul de Cluj, Banatul Azi.
  • Guest posting on Romanian niche blogs.
  • Original research and studies: if you publish data about your local market, journalists will cite it.

Measurement and continuous optimization

Local SEO is not a project with an end date, it is an ongoing process. Track monthly:

  • Local Pack position for main keywords (use Local Falcon or BrightLocal)
  • Google Business Profile insights: views, clicks, calls, directions
  • Organic traffic from Google Search Console, segmented by queries containing city names
  • Number and rating of reviews
  • Actual conversions: calls, forms, bookings

For a typical Romanian local business, a properly executed local SEO strategy brings first visible results in 60-90 days and clearly measurable ROI in 6-9 months. Reasonable budgets start at 800-1500 EUR per month for mid-sized cities and reach 2500-4000 EUR for the capital or highly competitive industries.

At Design Creator Lab we have delivered complete local SEO strategies for clients in Timișoara, Cluj, Bucharest and Iași, across medical, legal, HoReCa, retail and professional services.
