How to Generate Leads from Google: SEO and Ads

MarketingAugust 1, 2026·7 min·DCL Studio

For a service business, Google isn't just a place where you show up, it's the place where the customer looks for you exactly when they need you. Someone with a burst pipe, a divorce file, or a broken air conditioner doesn't scroll Facebook to discover a company. They type the problem into Google and pick from the top results. If you're there, you're on the shortlist. If you're not, you don't even exist for them.

The good news is that you have two levers that work together: SEO (organic, free, long-term results) and Google Ads (paid, fast, controllable results). They aren't competing strategies. They're two taps on the same pipe. Below I'll show you how to open both without burning money for nothing.

1. Understand what the customer searches for, not what you want to sell

The big mistake service firms make is optimizing for their own name or for vague terms like "quality services". Customers don't search that way. They search by their problem and their city: "24/7 plumber Cluj", "employment lawyer Timișoara", "apartment pest control București".

These are keywords with buying intent. Someone typing them is ready to contact somebody, not just to do research. Build a list of 15-20 such real searches, combining the specific service with your area. This list becomes the map for everything that follows, both for SEO and for Ads.

2. Local SEO: the free, long-term foundation

SEO means showing up in the organic results without paying per click. It takes longer to pay off, but once you hold a good position, leads come in steadily, without you paying for each one.

Google Business Profile, the best effort-to-result ratio

For local services, your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the first investment. It's free and it puts you on the map and in the local pack at the top, exactly where people look first. Fill in everything: the right category, hours, service area, phone, real photos. Then ask satisfied clients for reviews systematically. Reviews are the fuel that lifts you up the local rankings and convinces people you're the safe choice.

Your website: a dedicated page for each service and city

A single "Services" page with everything lumped together doesn't rank for anything specific. Google wants relevance. If you offer three services in two cities, you need separate pages, each optimized for a particular search. On each page you put a title with the service and the city, describe clearly what you solve, for whom, with what results, and add a visible form and call button.

Your website is the only place you control completely. A Facebook page isn't yours, and the rules change overnight. If you're wondering where to start with your online presence and how SEO connects to the rest of your promotion, we've laid it all out in the complete guide to promotion and lead generation for services.

Content that answers questions

Before buying, people look for answers: "how much does it cost", "how do I choose", "what's included". Articles that answer these questions honestly bring you traffic, position you as an expert, and prepare the ground for an enquiry. Don't write to fill the page, write to solve a real question the customer has.

3. Google Ads: fast leads on a controlled budget

SEO needs months to take hold. Ads bring in your first enquiries within hours. You pay per click, so you control exactly how much you invest. For a business that wants the phone to ring this week, Ads is the lever to start with.

Structure by themed groups, not everything in one bucket

The most common waste of budget comes from campaigns thrown together at random: all the keywords in one group, everything sent to the homepage. The result is that the ad doesn't match the search, and the customer leaves. Split your keywords into themed groups (one group per service) and send each ad to the relevant page on your site, not to the homepage. Someone searching for "fridge repairs" needs to land on the fridge repairs page, not on a general page.

Match types and negative keywords

Use exact match and phrase match for your main keywords, so you don't pay for irrelevant searches. Just as important is adding negative keywords: terms like "free", "jobs", "courses" or "diy" bring you clicks that never buy. A good negative keyword list cuts your waste the fastest.

Extensions and direct calls

Turn on the call extension, sitelinks to your main services, and the short texts that highlight what sets you apart (24/7 hours, warranty, free call-out). On mobile, the direct call button in the ad can produce a conversion without the person even visiting your site. For urgent services, that matters enormously.

4. The page the customer lands on decides everything

You can have the best SEO and the sharpest Ads campaigns, but if the landing page is weak, the lead doesn't happen. A few simple rules that make the difference:

  • A clear headline that confirms they've landed in the right place (the service and city they searched).
  • A phone number visible at the top, as a button that dials with one tap on mobile.
  • A short form: name, phone, a description of the problem. Don't ask for ten fields.
  • Trust signals: reviews, portfolio, certifications, warranty.
  • Load speed: a slow page on mobile loses the customer before they even see it.

A services customer can't test the result before paying, so they choose the company that seems safest. Your page has to convey exactly that in the first five seconds.

5. Measure conversions, not just clicks

If you don't measure, you're spending blind. Set up conversion tracking: form submissions and phone calls. That's the only way to know which keywords bring real enquiries and which just burn budget. After the first few weeks, you move the money to what converts and cut what doesn't produce. Optimization runs on data, not guesses.

6. SEO and Ads, together

The most effective approach uses both. Ads bring enquiries from day one and quickly show you which keywords convert. You use that data to prioritize your SEO pages. As SEO gains positions, you reduce your budget dependence on those terms and redirect Ads toward new or competitive searches. It's a cycle where each channel feeds the other.

Google isn't the only channel, and for some services it works very well combined with social. If you want to see how they complement each other, we've written separately about how to generate leads from social media.

Where to start, concretely

If you're starting from scratch, the practical order is clear. You set up and optimize your Google Business Profile and ask for your first reviews. You build dedicated pages for your main services and cities. You launch a small Ads campaign, structured into groups, with negative keywords and conversion tracking switched on. Then you optimize monthly based on real data. You don't have to do everything at once, but you do have to do each step right.
