A tech stack is the combination of languages, frameworks, databases and services your application runs on. A typical modern business stack looks like this: Next.js (frontend) + Laravel API (backend) + PostgreSQL (database) + Redis (cache) + AWS or Hetzner (hosting).
The decision matters for three concrete reasons:
- Maintenance cost: a poorly configured WordPress site can cost 200-300 EUR per month in fixes and updates, while a well-written Laravel application runs at 40-80 EUR per month.
- Development velocity: adding a new feature takes 2 days on the right stack and 2 weeks on the wrong one.
- Developer availability: in Timișoara, Cluj or Bucharest you find Laravel and React developers easily, but hiring for Ruby on Rails or Elixir takes months.
Five questions before you pick a stack
1. What type of product are you building
A 10-page brochure site with a contact form does not need the same stack as a marketplace with 50,000 users. The main categories:
- Brochure site (5-20 pages): Next.js with a headless CMS (Sanity, Strapi) or WordPress if the marketing team must publish without developer help. Typical budget: 1,600-5,000 EUR.
- E-commerce: Shopify for under 500 products without complex customisations, or a custom solution on Laravel and Next.js for ERP integrations, B2B pricing or specific order flows. Custom budget: 7,000-25,000 EUR.
- SaaS web application: Laravel or Node.js (NestJS) on the backend, Next.js or React on the frontend, PostgreSQL. MVP budget: 12,000-40,000 EUR.
- High-traffic platform: microservices architecture, queues (Redis, RabbitMQ), CDN, replicated databases.
2. How much will it grow in the next 2 years
If you have 100 users and plan to reach 1,000, any reasonable stack works. If you plan 100,000, you start looking at stacks that scale horizontally: Node.js, Go, or Laravel with Octane.
The classic mistake is over-engineering from day one. We have seen startups spend 80,000 EUR on Kubernetes microservices for a product with 50 customers. A monolithic Laravel app would have cost 15,000 EUR and taken them comfortably to 10,000 users.
3. Who will maintain the code after launch
This is the question almost every client forgets. If you keep working with the agency that built the product, it matters less. If you hire an in-house developer, you pick a stack that is popular in your city.
In Bucharest, Cluj and Timișoara the developer ecosystem is strong on: PHP/Laravel, JavaScript/Node.js, React/Next.js, Python/Django. On niche stacks (Phoenix/Elixir, Rust, Clojure) you pay 30-50% more and wait months for a hire.
4. Which integrations are critical
If your product must communicate with Romanian accounting systems like SmartBill, FGO or Oblio, with payment processors like NETOPIA or EuPlatesc, or with an ERP like SAP or Charisma, you check upfront which libraries exist for the chosen stack. Laravel and Node.js have mature packages for all Romanian systems. More exotic stacks force you to build integrations from scratch.
5. How important is SEO
For sites where organic traffic is a primary acquisition channel (shops, blogs, content portals), server-side rendering is mandatory. Next.js with SSR or ISR, Nuxt.js, or Laravel with Blade are the right choices. Pure Single Page Applications (React without SSR) are a bad decision for SEO in 2025.

Costly mistakes we have seen
- WordPress for a SaaS: a client in Cluj spent 40,000 EUR trying to turn WordPress into a clinic management platform. The Laravel rebuild took 4 months and cost 55,000 EUR. Total wasted: almost 100,000 EUR.
- Microservices for an MVP: a delivery app in Bucharest was built on 7 Node.js microservices before reaching its first 100 customers. Maintenance consumed the entire development budget for a year.
- Headless without a content strategy: Next.js sites with headless CMS handed to marketing teams that were not technically ready. They moved back to WordPress after 6 months.
- Technologies chosen by hype: products built on frameworks released 6 months earlier, where stable libraries for payments, email or authentication did not yet exist.
How to decide in practice
The correct process looks like this:
- Document functional requirements: what the product does, which integrations it needs, how many users you expect in 12-24 months.
- Set the total budget, including 3 years of maintenance. If the maintenance budget is under 100 EUR per month, you avoid stacks that require dedicated DevOps.
- Check developer availability on LinkedIn and local job boards for your city.
- Talk to 2-3 agencies or senior developers before signing a contract. If they all recommend different stacks, ask them to justify the decision with arguments tied to your business.
- Request a proof of concept for the critical features before committing the full budget.
